#OCisWaterSmart
For decades, MWDOC has offered programs and incentives designed to help Orange County residents and businesses save water, not just during periods of drought but every day. Eliminating water waste is easy with these helpful tips brought to you in partnership by MWDOC and UCCE Master Gardeners.
1. CONTROL YOUR CONTROLLER
Set adjustment reminders on your calendar.
2. RETROFIT SPRINKLERS
Upgrade to rotating sprinkler nozzles that water more evenly and efficiently than traditional pop-up spray heads.
3. HYDROZONE
Design each sprinkler valve line to irrigate plants with similar watering needs.
4. ENSURE EACH VALVE LINE USES THE SAME FLOW RATE SYSTEM
Don’t mix drip with traditional spray systems.
5. MONITOR SPRINKLERS REGULARLY
Maintain your system by fixing sprinkler heads to prevent overspray on sidewalks and drives.
6. CONSIDER TURF ALTERNATIVES
Replace thirsty turf grass with climate-appropriate plants.
7. UTILIZE PERMEABLE PAVING MATERIALS
Consider extending living spaces into the garden with permeable paving materials.
8. CHOOSE CLIMATE-APPROPRIATE PLANTS
Select water-smart plants that are adapted to Orange County’s Mediterranean climate.
9. MULCH AND AERATE YOUR SOIL
Mulch and aerate to keep soil open and permeable.
10. REDUCE EVAPORATION
Water your landscape in the early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation and interference from wind.
